Zgainski Breaks Through for Win

After coming in a close second the week before, Stawell Amateur Athletic Club runner Ted Zgainski went one better in the 16km Charlie Jones Handicap last Saturday.

Zgainski stormed to victory by a more than a minute.

Held over a testing course through the Iron Bark forest north of Stawell, Zgainski set a solid pace from the start. Running from the middle of the field, Zgainski pushed himself hard on the hills, making up substantial ground on the slower front markers.

By the half way mark, Zgainski had the front markers lined up, but Susie Ellis was not far behind and looked to have a strong chance.

On the long final climb to Centre Road, Zgainski still had a good lead, but Gary Howden was also setting a cracking pace.

However, Zgainski timed his race to perfection finishing a clear winner over second placed Ellis, with Gary Howden coming home third.

Ray Scott ran the fastest time of 67 minutes 47 seconds.

Junior runner Liam Scott easily accounted for the rest of the field in the junior 4km event, with Tobias Blair coming in second. Scott clocked the fastest junior time of 19 minutes and 4 seconds.
