Naomi Hunter has posted her second win of the season on a new 6 kilometre course along the Wimmera River, sponsored by the Telstra Shop Horsham. Hunter finished in a time of 37.31 minutes, hotly pursued by husband David Hunter just 12 seconds behind. In third place, two minutes later was fastest runner Bal Sukpreet.
Hunter had trouble with her achilles tendon last year, but has gradually built up the kilometres in her legs. In Hunter’s previous race, which was the Tyler’s Rural Handicap eight kilometre event, she was running really well for over half the race until she retired after feeling her achilles tighten.
Hunter has always found the longer cross country distances a challenge, however, this week she proved her form by keeping all challengers out. David said he was trying hard to catch her, but she was too strong.
In the Sub Junior division one kilometre event, the youngest of the Hunter’s, Chloe was the winner on handicap followed by sibling Olivia.
It was a memorable day for another reason too. Foundation member Keith Haymes conferred Life Memberships on race sponsors Gary and Sharon Howden for their contributions to the club over many years. Congratulations Gary and Sharon!
Next race will be held at Concongella Vineyard, Navarre Road, Stawell, Saturday 23rd June. It will be a 6.5 kilometre Championship Race.
