Stawell Amateur Athletic Club held the Stephen Baird 5000m on Saturday over the demanding Bonnie Dundee Dam course. Warm conditions greeted 30 runners at the start of the Sealed Handicap with several in form runners having a chance to win. After many years of driving his daughters from Horsham to Stawell to run each week, Rhys Alexander has decided to put on the running shoes. Having shown steady form already, Rhys notched up his first win for the season from Adrian Tyler in second place with Mark Pumpa coming in third.
Col Barnett once again recorded fastest time of 18 min 34 sec. Fastest female was Jacinta Collier in a time of 22 min 24 sec.
The Junior field of 13 runners also competed over the 5000m course, with Aaron running a great race to record the fastest time of 21 min 55 sec. This also gave him first place on handicap, from Alastair in second place with Lucy coming in third.
In the Sub-Junior race a good field of 13 runners ran a 2 km out and back course. Sophie ran hard to scored a great win from Hannah, with Liam third. What a great sight it was to see this young group of athletes running around the Ironbarks on a Saturday afternoon.
