Karl Scott Notches Second Win

Stawell Amateur Athletic Club teenager Karl Scott set the field alight again last Saturday, scoring his second handicap win in three weeks, when he easily accounted for the rest of the field in the Chris Blake Sealed Handicap 3km Championship.

The race was staged as a combined handicap and championship race, where all runners set off together, with the first across the line taking the Championship points. After the race, handicaps are applied to determine the actual race winner.

Twenty-four senior runners tackled the testing, hilly course, with the stronger runners quickly taking the lead. At the 1000m mark, Horsham runner Col Barnett had established a handy lead over Ray Scott, with Karl Scott close on his heels. Gary Howden, Mark Pumpa and Garry Rice were not far behind.

At the 2000m mark, Barnett still held the lead, with young Scott slipping into second place, ahead of father Ray. Rice had surged ahead of Howden, positions they all held to the line.

Barnett claimed the championship points with the fastest race time of 10 minutes 30sec. First female home was Susie Ellis, taking out the women’s championship points with the fastest women’s time of 12 minutes 4sec.

However, after handicaps were applied, Karl Scott emerged the clear race winner, with Susie Ellis second, and Col Barnett third.

Running in only his second season as a senior, young Scott is shaping up as a future threat to club champion and fastest runner of the last few years, Col Barnett, especially over the shorter distances.

The juniors ran the same 3km course as the seniors, with Nat Watson crossing the line first to take the junior boys Championship points, in a time of 12 minutes 31sec. Emily Parnaby was the fastest girl and junior girl Champion in a time of 13 minutes 58sec.

After handicaps were applied, new runner Megan Freckleton took the junior race win, with Jasinta Cameron putting in a good effort for second. Shaun Parnaby ran well for third.

The sub-juniors lined up for a 1000m handicap, on the track at North Park. Mackenzie Ellis scored a good win from the two Liams – Liam Scott and Liam Burns. Liam Scott ran the fastest sub-junior race time of 3 minutes 38sec. Mackenzie Ellis was the fastest sub-junior girl in 4 minutes 38sec.

During the sub-junior race wheel chair junior athlete Jannik Blair did a demonstration 3000m race around the track at the clubrooms, North Park, setting a very good time of 11 minutes 1sec. Well done Jannik!
