Karl Makes it Three for the Season

Stawell Amateur Athletic Club teenager Karl Scott held off a late charge by father Ray to score his third win for the season, when he took out the Lois Trimble Handicap last Saturday.

Twenty-three senior runners lined up in very warm conditions for the testing 5000m course over Stawell’s Big Hill.

Carolyn Lehmann led the field away, and ran extremely well to still have a 20 second lead with 600m to go. However, short distance specialist Karl Scott reeled her in up the final climb before the finish, then went on to win by 8 seconds from father Ray. John Kelly got up for third with Lehmann relegated to fourth.

Steve Page ran the fastest race time of 16 minutes 35sec, with Susie Ellis the best female in 21 minutes 11sec.

The junior runners also tackled the 5000m course. Nathan Watson, running from the back of the field, worked his way to the front with 800m to go, and went on to win, posting the fastest junior time of 21 minutes 58sec. Emma Kelly was second with the fastest girls time of 24 minutes 52sec. Emily Parnaby was third.

The sub-juniors tackled a 1500m out and back course, with Mackenzie Ellis running well to come home first. Georgia Barnett was second and Elly Atherton third.

Liam Scott ran the fastest sub-junior time of 4 minutes 34sec. Elly Barnett was the best sub-junior girl in 5 minutes 6sec.

Being the last race for the season, final Aggregate and Teams points were also decided. Horsham runner Col Barnett made a clean sweep of all the senior categories, winning the Senior Male Aggregate, the Teams competition, as well as the Senior Male Championship.

Susie Ellis won the Senior Female Championship, with Nat Watson and Emily Parnaby the junior boy and junior girl Champions. Emily Parnaby also won the Junior Aggregate.

Liam Burns was named the Most Consistent Sub-junior Boy, and Elly Barnett the Most Consistent Sub-junior Girl.

Encouragement awards went to junior runner Sarah Ellis and sub-junior runner India Burns for determined efforts throughout the season.
