Ilana Jorgensen Wins 10K

After consistent performances all season, Murtoa teenager Ilana Jorgensen finally broke through for her first win when she took out the Stawell Curtain Centre sealed handicap last Saturday.

Nineteen senior runners set off over the hilly 10 kilometre course, with Jorgensen being challenged most of the way by Ivan McDonald. It was not until a difficult section a few kilometres from home that Jorgensen’s younger legs enabled her to break clear, and cross the line a good 22 seconds ahead of second placed McDonald. Alexa Duke also put in another consistent performance to finish a further 12 seconds back in third place.

Sarah Ellis put in a strong performance to win the junior 4,000 metre sealed handicap in a time of 23 minutes and 54 seconds, just holding off a fast finishing Emma Kelly by only three seconds. Daniel Faravoni was a further 14 seconds back in third place.

In the sub-junior 1200 metre event Liam Scott flew home to post his second consecutive win, running a fast time of 4 minutes, 46 seconds. In second place was Somer Darnell with Liam Burns third. Liam Scott was the fastest sub-junior boy and Somer Darnell was the fastest sub-junior girl in a time of 6 minutes, 42 seconds.

This race was also the fourth and final race in the Championship series for 2007. As the race was run as a sealed handicap, the first runner across the line took out the championship points.

Jade Merret ran the fastest time of 37 minutes and 29 seconds to win his third Championship race of the year and in doing so clinch the Open Men’s series. Col Barnett was successful in winning the Veteran Men’s section and the 2007 series.

In the Open Women’s section Ilana Jorgenson ran the fastest womens time of 46 minutes, 37 seconds, and won the series, while Alexa Duke cleaned up in the Veteran Woman’s section winning the race and the series.

Daniel Faravoni won junior boy’s 4,000 metre Championship with a fast time of 14 minutes and 36 seconds, making it his fourth Championship win for the year and a clean sweep for the series. Emily Parnaby, running an impressive time of 17 minutes and three seconds won the junior girl’s Championship race, also her fourth for the year sealing the girls Championship series.
