Father and Daughter Double

After some great recent form and minor placings Stawell Amateur Athletic Club runner Phil Burns finally put it all together last Saturday to take out the Barham’s Insurance 8km Handicap.

Burns held on over the closing stages of the testing bushland course to claim his second victory for the year.

With tough competition coming from Keith Lofthouse, Steve Baird and Bob Freeland, Burns was pressed all the way, but tackled the hills hard to hold off the last minute challengers, crossing the line well clear of Bob Freeland in second place.

Steve Baird overcame Lofthouse to claim third. Fastest time of the day was 30 minutes 36 seconds by backmarker Adrian Tyler.

Ilana Jorgensen was the quickest female in 39 minutes and 9 seconds.

In the junior 4km event backmarker Liam Scott powered to victory in the last 200m to win in the fastest time of the day, 17 minutes 50 seconds.
Elly Barnett put in a determined effort to come in a close second only 5 seconds behind Scott.

Ebony Darnell rounded out the placings coming in third.

India Burns made it a family double when she won the sub-junior 1000 meter event. Burns looked untouchable as she cruised her way to victory by more than 30 seconds over second placed Somer Darnell.

Darnell ran the fastest sub-junior time of 4 minutes 40 seconds.

Scarlett Burns put in another great run to come home third.
