Casey Still Striving for Goals

Sandra Casey, hasn’t quite fulfilled the first of the goals she set for herself when she joined the Stawell Amateur Athletic Club last year, but is rapidly zeroing in on a second.

After winning her first race at Haven, near Horsham, just over a year ago, Casey declared that she wanted to run five kilometres in a respectable 25 minutes and finish a half-marathon.

She didn’t beat the clock with her win in the corresponding Horsham Physiotherapy and Podiatry Handicap at Haven last Saturday but that has steeled her to press on to the women’s only Susan Half Marathon in Melbourne on December 7. “I was really happy with the way I got through the 16 kilometre race the previous week and I’ve thought about running the Stawell Hospital Half Marathon but I don’t think I’m quite ready for that,” she said. “I plan to step up my mileage now that I know that I can handle at least 16k without discomfort.

The goal to run a sub-25 minute for the five (km) will just have to wait a bit longer. A lingering injury has prevented me from doing much about that.” Casey, Meggy Boan and Rhonda Rice filled the placings in the 16k Hyperno Marathon Warm-Up in Stawell and the same three swept aside the males at Haven.

The boys did better in the 1.5km Sub-Junior division of the race, but Logan Casey kept control in the family with a dashing win over brother Jacob and Jordan Nitschke.
