Barnett Wins Championship

The last championship race for this season, the Stawell Curtain Centre 10,000m Sealed Handicap Championship, was held in the picturesque Rifle Range Reserve with a field of 25 senior runners lining up in clear fine conditions.

Horsham runner Col Barnett lead all the way to make a clean sweep of all the Championship races this season in winning this event by almost 2 minutes. Jacinta Collier won the Open Female Championship and Susie Ellis won the Veteran Female Championship.

When handicaps were applied it was the in form runner Mark Pumpa, running a P.B. by 1 min 30 sec, who won from Peter Hilbig in second place with Gaynor Radovic third.

With only four races remaining for the season, interest in the aggregate points is starting to hot up. Gaynor Radovic is in the lead with 94 points. John Collins is on 89 and Peter Blair is on 87. Surprise challenges could come from Meg Parnaby, Stan Watson or Peter Hilbig.

Twelve Juniors lined up for the Junior Championship Sealed Handicap race run over a 4km course. Marcus ran brilliantly to win in a great time of 15 min 31 sec from Adam in second place. Marcus sealed the SAAC Junior Champion for 2003 with his win. Adelene won the Junior Girl Championship by one point from Lucy.

When handicaps were applied Marcus also won the handicap race with Emily P in second place and Alastair third. Hugh seems to have a firm grip on the aggregate with 58 points with Marcus and Emily P on 53 points.

Eleven Sub-Juniors lined up for the 1.25km Sealed Handicap. Nathan lead all the way and was first home in a time of 4 min 38 sec, followed by Jackson. When handicaps were applied Hannah was the winner with Fraser second and Liam third.
