Baird Wins at Newington Dam

Boag’s Sports and Cycles Handicap

The Stawell Amateur Athletic Club held the Boags Sports and Cycles Handicap on Saturday afternoon in perfect race conditions. Only 21 brave senior runners lined up for the 10 km run. Course marker Charlie Jones designed a very challenging course, starting at the Newington Road Dam, passing through the Ironbarks and with an up hill stretch to the finish.

Rhonda Clark, after finishing close to a win several times, looked to be the one to beat at the halfway mark, but a fit Steve Baird took a liking to the longer distance to run past Clark, scoring a win by only 5 seconds with ever consistent Peter Blair again finishing third.

The fastest time once again went to Col Barnett who finished in a time of 36 min 42 sec. Fastest female was Jacinta Collier in a time of 43 min 22 sec.

The Junior race was ran over 4 km, with one of the new runners this season, Adelene, putting in a superb run to scoring her first win with the club.

Adam also ran very well, running a personal best to finish second. The fastest Junior time went to Marcus in 16 min 3 sec.

Eight Sub-Juniors lined up for the 2 km race which saw front marker Emily lead all the way to score a good win.

Nathan put in a good effort for second placing, with Harry third. Nathan ran the fastest Sub-Junior time of 8 min 7 sec.
