2017 Cross Country Season

The President and Committee of Stawell Amateur Athletic Club extend to all members and officials, a warm welcome to season 2017 of cross-country running.

The good news is that after paying a reduced senior membership fee of $20 (previously $30) no race fees will apply for any runner in any race, though we do trust that you will continue to support the weekly raffle.

The President-sponsored race this year is the five kilometres One More Step for Ray Handicap on the Steve Baird course. Steve, who sponsors the 16km event for this year only, has generously loaned his course for the event that honours the memory of Ray Rickard, our diligent, loyal and irreplaceable life member who sadly passed away in December of last year. Kath Rickard named the race herself and members of Ray’s family are expected to run.

Of course, we couldn’t expect them to run 16km, so hence the “swap.”

There will be at least two courses that will change this year. The Dave and Naomi Hunter Gardens and Landscaping Handicap will be raced on a modified course which will remove the bitumen section on the Navarre Road. It was agreed that the race towards 100kmh traffic, even on the extreme shoulder of the road, was too great a risk to runners.

David, Naomi and family will generously provide morning tea after the race, but members are invited to contribute.

The second change will be to the Horsham Physiotherapy and Podiatry Handicap, sponsored by practitioners Sean and Sandra Casey. A 2 x 2.5-kilometre course the club marked out for Stawell’s successful “Colour Run” in early April will be utilised and will provide even more variety to our ever-expanding range of courses.

To all newcomers, we offer a special welcome. Our races are conducted in the spirit of friendly competition and are handicapped to cater for runners of all abilities to give everyone a chance of winning sponsor-donated trophies or prizes.

  • Note: Our two races combined with the Stawell and Ararat Cross Country club, the Lindsay Kent Memorial and Best’s Great Western Classic this year start at 9.45on Sunday, June 25, and July 23.
